The video study of geography lesson: Which map skills teachers develop in their geography lesson?

Abstract

Map skills development is a topic widely discussed in both Czech and foreign research studies. Within the extensive discussion on the Czech system of education and its changes, map skills are considered crucial for the future education, and it is therefore not surprising that Czech geography educators focus on this topic intensively.

Although there are many studies into map skills of Czech secondary students, still a little is known about "What happens in geography lessons when developing student map skills?". The poster presents findings gained from video study 20 geography teachers on the secondary educational level.

Observed outcomes are confronted with responses from a structured interview carried out with participating teachers. These interviews focus on the topic of personal approach towards geography education and map skills development.

These two simultaneous surveys allow unique comparison of theoretical/intended (interview) and practical (real lesson) aspects of geography teaching. The results show a clear incongruity between teacher's intentions declared during the interviews and the reality recorded.

Some teachers declare higher goals that they do not fulfill in practice. Others are greatly underestimated
