Abstract

Eduard Albert was born on 20 January 1841 in Žamberk. He had five more siblings, and it wasn't easy for parents to keep their eldest son in college.

He joined the University of Vienna in 1861. His first medical graduation was on 22 January 1867.

In 1872 Albert won the right to lecture at the college and was appointed associate professor. On September 23, 1873, he took over the management of a surgical clinic in Innsbruck.

On February 2, 1881, Emperor Franz Joseph I confirmed him by appointment decree to the position of Chief of the First Surgical Clinic in Vienna. He was regarded on many sides as the most educated surgeon of his time.

In 1886 he was called to the Board of Health. In December 1887 he became Councilor of the Court and on 12 January 1895 he was appointed Life Member of the House of Lords.

He strongly advocated mandatory vaccination against variola. In 1900, he received an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in London.

Increasingly, he returned to his native Žamberk. He liked the history of medicine.

In the last period of his life he was often seriously ill. In the late summer of 1900, Professor Albert suffered from a stomach haemorrhage.

He completed a convalescent stay in Žamberk. On the morning of September 26, 1900, the professor was found dead.

One of the causes was stroke. Currently the former seat of Albert in Žamberk (now Albertinum) provides assistance to persons who have reduced self-sufficiency due to age or their state of health.
