Abstract
Historia Langobardorum or the History of the Lombards is the most famous work of the Lombard scholar and significant representant of the Carolingian Renaissance Paul the Deacon (+ ca after 796). Along with the short anonymous work Origo gentis Langobardorum (The origin of the Lombards) from the second half of the 7th century, Paul's text represents our main source of knowledge of the Lombard history.
The author describes in six books the mythical origin of the tribe, its journey through semimythical lands to the Danubian area in Panonia, the conquest of Italy and reign of the Lombard kings up to the death of king Liutprand in 744. The book has been translated to Czech for the first time.
