I Speak Arabic: Czech and Arabic in Comparative Perspective

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2019

Abstract

This article attempts to provide a mosaic-like description of Arabic, a Semitic language which is spoken by more than 300 millions of people. It looks at the language from several perspectives.

It introduces the reader to Arabic language context characterized by diglossia, and points out some of its consequences. Subsequently, it deals with individual language levels (acoustic, graphic, morphological and syntactic) and focuses on differences and similarities between Czech and Arabic.

The purpose of the article is to point out some problems that might occur in Czech language learners of Arab origin, and describe their potential sources.
