Virtuoso in Bath: Scott's Earliest Inspiration

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2021

Abstract

The paper focuses on Walter Scotts' stay in Bath in 1775. This episode is the most colourful period of his childhood.

For the first time, he and his aunt Jenny went on a long adventure. In England, Walter became more acquainted with British culture and history and he also met people who influenced him for life.

Here Walter found lasting inspiration, which he used both in his fiction and when he planned the royal visit to Scotland in 1822. The paper will analyse the literary and cultural influences and also some medical treatment that Scott underwent.
