Czech contemporary sacred music and its use in singing lessons

Abstract

The paper is related to the author's prepared dissertation, which focuses on sacred compositions for solo voice and organ by Czech contemporary composers. Due to the ruling communist ideology in our country, everything related to the church and faith in God has been despised and suppressed.

The totalitarian regime, with its anti-church restrictions, interrupted the long continuity of the development of sacred music in our country, and this was also reflected in a decrease in the interest in sacred music among performers, musicologists and teachers. Even today, 30 years after the Velvet Revolution, we find knowledge about Czech sacred music still insufficient and incomplete.

This situation is also reflected in music education, especially in the teaching of solo singing. Teachers usually work only with the traditional secular repertoire of the 19th century, although contemporary sacred music offers a wide range of vocal compositions that can be used in singing lessons at various levels of schools.

By providing often unavailable musical scores, the author of this paper would like to motivate teachers and students to be interested in contemporary sacred music and to give them inspiration for further concert or pedagogical activities.
