From intimate to insulting: Ideophonic representations of "chubby" in Sakha

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2021

Abstract

The following paper concerns ideophones (or ideophonic verbs) depicting chubbiness, plumpness or roundness, usually of a face or the whole body of a person. The paper is a result of field research in the Sakha Republic conducted in the fall of 2019, with examples supplemented from spontaneous utterances of Sakha language from the Internet (both from comment sections and blogs).

The analysed taboo-related lexemes were gathered in-situ, nevertheless, we opted to use data from the internet in this article for its more transparent structure and meaning. The lexemes and socio-pragmatic information were gathered by the use of a questionnaire with randomized age, gender and cultural and social background of responders, and by debriefing three key informants (AB, EA and EM, each originally from different ulus, "district").
