Deaf Art in the Czech Republic

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2021

Abstract

In her contribution, Ivana outlined the past and current situation of Czech deaf artists in terms of visual art, film, photography and literary work. She introduced the publications of literary and artistic work made by deaf authors, which have been published in the Czech Republic so far.

Ivana also introduced the Czech Deaf Art 3+1 artistic group's work - their art workshops and art projects, thanks to which the group had the opportunity to organise a photographic course for the deaf learners and online presentations about Art history in Czech sign language. As part of this project, Ivana completed the book, an anthology, which was recently published.

It is called "Prague through the Eyes of the Deaf". It is a collection of photographic, literary and visual artwork made by Czech deaf artists, the photographic course for the deaf learners and also the attendees of the art workshops, led by Ivana in the Czech Union of the Deaf, Prague.

The book also contains the interviews with 23 deaf witnesses. Unique statements include memories of two historical events - the Occupation of Warsaw Pact Troops in 1968 and the Velvet Revolution in 1989.

Some of the interviews are supplemented by QR codes, which refer to videos in Czech sign language with the stories of witnesses.
