Utopia and America are two constitutive pillars of Western modernity that was woven between both sides of the Atlantic. The relationship between America and utopia has been, since the dawn of the sixteenth century, something constant: the fascination for utopia has since than gone hand in hand with the fascination for America.

Through twelve essays and twelve different perspectives, this book explores the relation between America and utopia. From the historical evocation of the myths that accompanied the conquest and colonization of the New World to the imaginaries that guide political action in our days; from utopian literature, the genre that gives the phenomenon its name, to its mark on the world of art, social movements and revolutions; from European cultural projections to genuinely Latin American utopian aspirations.
