Reading Buildings: Textual Turn of Architecture as a Complement to Spatial Turn of Literary Studies

Abstract

The proposed paper offers an insight into the development of textual turn of contemporary architectural theory and practice, perceived as a response to spatial turn embraced by literary studies. This paper has the following objectives: first, to explain and exemplify the nature of connection of these two contemporary tendencies; second, to summarise different theoretical approaches to textual turn of architecture drawing on works pioneering and highlighting this practice; and, third, to provide practical examples of the mutual influence and involvement as well as enrichment of textual turn of architecture and spatial turn of literary studies.
