The effects of the pandemic on tourism and recreation

Abstract

Diseases are substantial constraints for tourism. The present article aims to delineate how and why tourism has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anti-epidemic measures, including the closure of borders and restrictions on leisure mobility, were substantial. This is shown by data from accommodation establishments as well as from tourist attractions, namely zoos, which are used in the article to illustrate the situation.

The highest losses were recorded by destinations dependent on international tourism.
