Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové |
2021

Abstract

The review study is designed for practitioners for children and adolescents. In empirical part, it relies on international resources from 2001-2020.

In introductory part, the study recall that when referencing empirical data obtained by foreign authors, the question arises as to how transferable the results and experiences are to another sociocultural environment. The first part of the study is devoted to the change that occurred after more than forty years: the International Association for the Study of Pain revised definition of pain it adopted in year 1979.

The modified definition and its commentary reflected the progress made during this period in scientific knowledge of pain. The second part of the study present interesting views of children and adolescents on pain (including children's misconceptions).

The data was obtained from both a group of preschool children aged 5-6 and a group of school children aged 8-12. Finally, research findings are presented that summarize (based on available literature) the seven main characteristics of the pain phenomenon from perspective of children and adolescents.
