Abstract

The article presents the issue of lifestyle risk factors as carriers of the modern lifestyle epidemic. It focuses on five most important risk factors: smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, unhealthy diet and obesity.

It explains how the prevalence of these risk factors is identified and measured in population, what the health effects of these risk factors may be, and how their prevalence varies across Europe. It also briefly mentions the possibilities of prevention and early detection of certain diseases.
