Abstract

Motivation is an important factor in learning foreign languages. Findings about English as a foreign language (EFL) learning motivation for Czech students are scarce.

This study aims to compare the level of student EFL learning motivation using L2 Motivation Self System theory between male and female students at the end of their compulsory education. The results of a pilot study (N = 148) show that the ranking of mean scores on motivation subscales was the same for boys and girls.

Girls reported (mostly nonsignificantly) higher average scores on all subscales than boys.
