Abstract
Th e article commemorates Jan Svatopluk Presl, the founder of Czech natural science terminology. Th e focus of the paper is on the remarks concerning the Czech names of prehistoric animals in the fi rst paleontological work published in Czech - Baron Jiří Cuvier's Discussion on the Upheavals of the Earth's Crust and the Changes in the Animal Kingdom Caused by Th em, in terms of natural history and history.
Although many of these terms are used by contemporary lexicography (e.g. Czech-German dictionary, especially the grammatical and phraseological one by Fr. Št.
Kott and Josef Jungmann's Czech-German Dictionary) have been recorded, they are not currently used, unlike many terms in the fi eld of botany, mineralogy and zoology, for example.
