Abstract

The goal of treatment of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is low disease activity, the lowest possible burden of pain, stiffness, and limited mobility, and thus the best possible quality of life for patients with this chronic inflammatory disease. To achieve this goal, there is an ever-expanding range of pharmacotogical agents.

However, to maintain the patienťs cooperation in the variable course ofthe disease and complications in therapy, it is necessary to use the available non-pharmacological treatment approachesfrom the onset ofthe disease. Sufficient and repeated education ofthe patient leads to his active cooperation in treatment.

Regulartherapeutic physical education helps to maintain the correct posture, maintain or even improve the mobility ofthe spině and peripheral joints, and the associated improved mobility and better functional abilities. Physical therapy methods can help relieve pain orfacilitate kinesiotherapy.

Methods of medical rehabilitation must always be applied individually, depending on the activity and severity ofthe disease. However, they should be ušed along with any pharmacotogical treatment.

A patient with axSpA must always be motivated to a healthy lifestyle and physical activities, also with regard to the prevention of possible comorbidities and complications ofthe disease. Surgical (orthopedic and spondylo-fneurosurgical) interventions represent a separate chapter and betong to the treatment modalities of severe axSpA.
