Asperger syndrome and emotions: emotion recognition and empathy

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2021

Abstract

This article summarizes actual research findings and therapeutic experiences of the author about Asperger Syndrome (sometimes also about Autism Spectrum Disorder - ASD) and emotions. It describes specifically two topics: recognition of other people's emotions and empathy, which are typically linked with Asperger Syndrome (AS) and ASD.

First part is dedicated to biological differences between AS and neurotypical people (in brain structure and hormonal functioning). Next part describes new researches about AS and emotion recognition, these researches found sometimes opposite results, some of them found differences between AS and neurotypical people, but some of them didn't.

According to other studies about empathy, it is important to consider two parts of empathy: emotional and cognitive empathy. There are probably difficulties in both, but cognitive empathy is probably more problematic for AS people.

In the end the author discusses possible reasons for different research results and suggest other potential direction of future articles.
