Abstract

Creativity is considered an essential skill for life in the 21st century. This literature review describes creativity in an educational context, relates it to art education and offers a broader transdisciplinary perspective.

It introduces the sub-aspects of creativity that are important for defining and understanding this skill and uses three international models to show how creativity can be conceptualized for educational application in schools. It compares the models and foreshadows their usefulness for pedagogical practice.

It assumes that creativity is learnable, a fundamental finding for the possibilities of developing, monitoring and evaluating creativity in schools.
