Clinical significance of the epiglottis

Abstract

Epiglottis in clinical practice in the field of anesthesia and intensive care is perceived as part of the airways, most often in the context of tracheal intubation. If the pathology or abnormality of the epiglottis does not play a role in the cause of airway problems in a particular clinical situation, we usually do not pay too much or detailed attention to it.

Assessment of the epiglottis in routine laryngoscopy prior to tracheal tube placement can provide valuable additional information in clinical decision making.
