Abstract

Presentation at the conference of Czech Educational Research Association: This study focuses on previously identified school-related factors associated with the (non)use of shadow education (private tutoring, PT) by school's pupils. Regression analyses are performed on a representative sample of 1280 pupils in the 9th grade of primary schools and the relevant grades of multi-year gymnasia.

The worse students perceive the quality of school teaching in mathematics and the Czech language, the more likely they are to use PT. However, the perceived quality is irrelevant in English.

By increasing the quality of teaching mathematics and Czech, schools can directly reduce the need for PT in these subjects.
