Thomas Aquinas and John Duns Scotus are the most representative philosophers of the Middles Ages. In the wake of a long interpretative tradition, the Portuguese Franciscan Francisco Macedo (Coimbra 1596-Padova 1681) compares their philosophical systems by offering to the contemporary reader a table of their greatest differences.

This book analyses the case of human cognition, whose proximity to the angel's is emphasised by Macedo in the wake of his reading of Scotus. Each chapter is followed by a short anthology of texts in translation with notes and bibliography.
