Incidence and curability of solid tumors in children and adolescents

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |

Abstract

Compared to adult tumors, childhood cancers are relatively uncommon and account for about 0.5% of all cancers. Their importance from a medical, economic and social point of view is nevertheless crucial.

Cancer remains the second most common cause of death in children and adolescents, despite significant progress in their curability over the past 25 years. Curing most children and adolescents (70-75%) from their tumor is certainly an excellent matter.

However, we must not overlook the fact that more than half of those cured suffer from one or more chronic health problems, which often require multidisciplinary care. The most common problems include endocrine and growth disorders, neurological and a number of organ damage.
