Abstract

Velázquez's painting Las Meninas provoked many analyzes from leading philosophers such as Michel Foucault and John Searle. It is no coincidence, because the painter used a number of techniques in creating his painting to form the illusion of reality, which collide in various ways and play out a wide range of interpretive possibilities.

In this article, I will try to clarify the relatively sophisticated and refined way in which a painter uses a mirror, not one, but two of them. The painting refers to other paintings that use a mirror to evoke and expand the illusion of reality.
