Abstract

The volume deals with the relations of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia in the 1970s and 1980s when both countries found themselves in the period of so-called late socialism. Apart from the political dimension the book follows the contacts between two socialist federations in a wider social and cultural perspective.

It pays attention to such phenomena as travelling, tourism, working migration and cultural exchange. Through the multilayered relations the authors scrutinize mutual reflexion on the level of governing as well as wider social structures.

They argue that both socialist systems of governance, the Czechoslovak real socialism and the Yugoslav system of socialist self-management, used the mutual comparison as an important tool in the process of forming and confirming their own ideological and political identity.
