The aim of the given lecture was to define a framework in which the French foreign policy was based in the period of 1898-1904. The goal was firstly to analyse Delcassé's views on French presence in the Upper Nile in the 1890s in a wider context of international development and wider context of French colonial interests.
Secondly, to explain how the Fashoda crisis was dealt with by Delcassé with the focus on the transformation of Delcassé's approach to pursuing the Quai d'Orsay goals. And finally, to conclude whether Delcassé's foreign policy conception can be characterized and if certain continuity or steps towards agreement between France and Britain can be traced down in his attitudes and actions.
