Diatopic variants of verbal flexion in continental Portugal

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2020

Abstract

The monograph is dedicated to the diatopic variability of verbal flexion in the dialects of European Portuguese. In particular, it focuses on alternations in the first person of the singular of the past simple tense, because this person of the given tense is the most varied and also offers the widest opportunity to systematize the revealed phenomena.

The study is based on a corpus composed of dialectological questionnaires, where the existing alternations of regular and irregular verbs are first identified and then localized and plotted to show whether their geographical distribution corresponds to the traditional division of Portuguese dialects into northern and southern dialects. Furthermore, their historical development is described, which proves that many of these changes are, as expected, a manifestation of the preservation of more archaic verb forms.

At the end of the study, the revealed phenomena are systematized into typological subgroups.
