Latin Indirect Questions Introduced with the Word ut

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

The aim of this article is to attract attention to a particular type of indirect questions, namely those with the word ut. This type of indirect questions is rarely discussed in grammars and barely ever present in teaching materials (which is regrettable, if we consider how difficult it is to master all the functions of this extremely tricky word).

The article shows also that utterances with these indirect questions form three specialized constructions with specific discourse functions (demonstration, persuasion, and synopsis). The last section discusses whether this type of dependent clause should be actually considered an indirect question at all.
