Abstract

The paper presents the first results of an anonymous questionnaire survey conducted by the author in the summer of 2021 among 2031 people aged 60 and over. The questionnaire focused on the activities of Czech older adults and the ways in which they cope with their own age and ageing but also included several questions on education. 29% of senior Internet users conduct intensive education (more than 30 hours), another 14% repeatedly but to a lesser extent, 17% only in isolated cases and 41% not at all.

Of those who are intensively educated, the majority are women (87%) and people from Prague and regional cities. There is a rough balance of age groups between 65-79 years.

Almost a third of participants are still gainfully employed. Participation in organised education is related (as expected) to better health, absence of chronic pain conditions, belonging to the upper and middle social class and being more active overall (according to self-assessment).

Associations of educational participation with emotional well-being, a symptom of 'successful ageing', were also examined.
