Abstract

This paper introduces research conducted (during the coronavirus pandemic) among Erasmus+ students at Charles University attending Czech language courses. The focus of this paper is to introduce the data collection tool and the potential of exploring Czech in the context of multilingualism.

L2 Motivational Self-System (L2MSS, Dörnyei 2005, 2009) was utilized as the theoretical model. Existing questionnaires and results from the preceding, qualitative stage of the research helped create a new questionnaire that mapped the motivation and attitudes of 48 students to learn Czech.

As a result, the motivational profile of the average Erasmus+ student was presented. Since one of the key factors in motivation to learn Czech was the attitude towards learning languages in general, the Multilingual Self-System should be applied to further explore Czech as the target language in contexts where it is an L3+ for the learners.
