Depression and loneliness among residents living in nursing and residential homes: a scoping review

Abstract

Loneliness and depression is wordwide problem espesially among older adult. We tried to identify prevalences of depression and loneliness in nursing homes.

We did Scoping review where we included 27 studies connected with this topic. It has been comfirmed in several studies that loneliness is corelated with depression or even with suicidal thoughts but not habing an impact on mental health but also having impact on phzsical health as loneliness is connected with higher risk of stroke, heart attact, decrased mobility or increase pain.

We also identified that lonelines was connected with demografic factors like age, sex, education, religion. Further more was highlighted that healthcare proffesionals needs to educated about importance of mental health well -being and good practise tool needs to be in place.
