Abstract

The chapter serves as introduction of the whole volume. It presents the main theme of the book and argues for the importance of small towns as the research topic.

Furthermore it shortly discusses the conceptual basis (resilience, heritage). In the last section, the case studies included in the volume are briefly introduced.
