Looking back at Milan Šára and Jan Holub

Abstract

Obituary of two bohemians, long-term colleagues from the Institute of Bohemian Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, where they taught Czech to foreigners. Milan Šára excelled in his outlook on contemporary world linguistics.

He mainly taught syntax. Jan Holub was mainly involved in teaching vocabulary and lexicology.

Both are co-authors of the Dictionary of Czech Phraseology and Idiomatics and have significantly contributed to the creation of descriptions of Czech as a foreign language according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. They are also the authors of a number of proven Czech textbooks for foreigners.
