Consultative Assembly, Dialogue and Dialectics : An Outline of the Historical Transformation of Dialogue

Publication at Faculty of Humanities |
2021

Abstract

The chapter seeks to show the extent to which the beginnings of philosophical dialogue can be traced back to Homeric epics, at the same time, however, it also reveals the limits of this comparison - limits that lie in a different basic perspective on the nature of humanity, on the true nature of reality, and on the relationship to divinity. The comparative relationship to divinity will take us from the shifts between the proto-form of dialogue in the consultative assembly and the strict genre of philosophical dialogue to yet another shift, directly within the thinking of Plato's texts.

It is a shift from the present dialogue between the partners to the inner dialectic of thinking and to the contemplation.
