The search for personal integrity of parents of children with mental disabilities as a hitherto unknown position of courage in communist Czechoslovakia

Abstract
The main topic of the paper is human courage. Th e courage to resist injustice in a totalitarian regime and at the same time the courage to be a parent to a child with a disability.
According to the author, both of these positions are closely related, because the care of people with mental disabilities is not only a diffi cult task for his loved ones, but it is also a test of the level of humanity and morality of the state system. On the border of special pedagogy and history, this article will become an interdisciplinary contribution to understanding coping with the stigma of diff erence in a totalitarian dictatorship and a tribute to human courage to resist the oppression and dishonesty of the other person.
