Heterogeneous Influences on the Reading of Scripture in the Early Church

Publication at Hussite Theological Faculty |

Abstract

The article explains some concepts of ancient exegesis and outlines trends in its evolution. It sheds light on the ancient conception of the two-levels-reading of Scripture and shows the historical anchoring of the Alexandrian and Antiochene exegetical traditions in contemporary culture and science.

It concludes by reflecting on how ancient exegesis can be an example for a modern interpretation of Scripture. Finally, it argues that the exegete bears full responsibility for the impact of the exegesis on Christian lives and cannot blame it on Scripture.
