Abstract

This article focuses on the Isthmus of Panama and its geopolitical importance to the world in the late nineteenth century. Czech travelers visited the Latin American continent extensively during the period, but only members of the Roezl family visited Panama.

Eduard Klaboch and Bohumil Houda then in their writings presented a unique example among Czech travelers, because in their texts they reflected not only traditional themes such as nature, demography or ethnography etc. Thanks to the geographical circumstances and the international interest in the isthmus, their texts also speak about geopolitics.

The goal of this contribution is to present this family and analyze the contemporary texts of its two members Eduard Klaboch and Bohumil Houda published in the press or located in their files in the Náprstek Museum Archive in Prague.
