Laboratory and vascular component of ckd-mbd: Analysis of cohort dialyzed patients

Abstract

Mineral and bone disorder associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD-MBD) is associated with cardiovascular complications, which represents the most common cause of morbidity as well as of mortality among dialysis patients. The primary abnormality are calcifications of medial wall of arteries.

Our work focused on the prevalence of medial artery calcifications and their relation to laboratory component of CKD-MBD. The main finding was their high prevalence (67% of all patients).

Medial calcifications were associated with either the lowest or the highest quartile of serum parathyroid hormone concentrations. This result supports the necessity to maintain the bone remodelation rate in dialysis patients close to the physiological conditions.

For more detailed analysis of the relation between arterial calcifications and bone metabolizm in renal failure patients more studies are mandatory, focusing not only on clasical wiev on laboratory component of CKD-MBD, but also on novel bone markers
