Abstract

In 1821 - just 200 years ago - a slim 40-page paper with the Latin name Conspectus fungorum esculentorum qui per decursum anni 1820 Pragae publik vendebantur was published in Prague. The text of the publication was bilingual, in addition to Latin and German.

In Czech translation it reads: An overview of edible mushrooms that were sold in Prague in 1820. The author was Vincenc Julius Krombholz (1782–1843), a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Prague.

In the preface, he explains why he wrote the publication: “To give mycologists an aid to learn about the habitats and time of occurrence of mushrooms from the vicinity of Prague, and to provide mushroom users with accurate descriptions of edible mushrooms to avoid poisonous mushrooms. Give future medical topography workers a list of fungi that make up a significant proportion of food, and finally help university students to ease difficult study. ”
