Abstract

In 2015 Romanian writer Varujan Vosganian published his most successful novel Cartea șoaptelor (The Book of Whispers). This paper analyses the main topics of the book - the author's childhood, image of the town and presentation of Armenian history in the 20th century.

The childhood is described in an idyllic way, the narrator is fascinated by the world around and all the activities. In Moldavian town Focșani we can observe several topoi like a grocery shop, a church or a cemetery.

The most important part of the novel consists of "little histories" of the author's old grandparents and their friends, who were born in the Ottoman Empire and survived the genocide during WWI. The structure of the text is not linear, but it is rather text-tissue according to literary theorist and writer Daniela Hodrová.
