Family transformations - how to be a good enough parents

Abstract

The lecture first introduced the main developmental forms of the family, the concept of the child and upbringing in relation to the transformations of social life (e.g. the establishment and development of the school institution). It went into detail about the contemporary family, the personalized conception of the child, and the growing opposition between (affective) family vs. threatening (impersonal) institutions.

In conclusion, it drew attention to some dangers and recommended: not to instrumentalize affective relationships and, on the contrary, to dampen projective tendencies – the child is neither a clone of parents nor an implementer of their unfulfilled dreams; the child does not "belong" to the parents as an object, but the upbringing is to help him become an emancipated subject; perceive the positive contribution of impersonal institutions and rules – they are not the enemy of the family (dis-identification is also important – an opportunity for the child's personal development); have a basic overview of the virtual world of their children and use it positively; parental availability (to devote oneself to a child) is not a quantitative variable. Parents should realize that there are other activities and institutions than just educational and developmental ones.
