Metaphors by which they control (us): expressiveness in the speeches of contemporary Czech politicians

Abstract

Politicians are not just "translators" of a certain ideological doctrine and do not just pass on "dry" information. The public image of a contemporary politician must represent his personality and charisma, with an emphasis on creating an original image of every politician so that voters can remember and pay attention to it.

In political communication, we hear categorical judgments, controversial evaluations as well as expressive and emotional expressions, jargon or anecdotes. Conceptual metaphors are important means of influencing voters.

The lecture will try to answer the questions of what metaphors (and why they are) chosen by contemporary Czech politicians for manipulating public opinion in three conceptual areas: corruption, Czexit (proposal for the Czech Republic's withdrawal from the European Union), resp. place of the Czech Republic in Europe in general, and the refugee crisis.
