The Tribalization of Post-Revolutionary Libya : A Dilemma of Tribality and Statehood

Abstract

Tribalism is one of the key hallmarks of Libya's social and political life and of the Libyan identity itself. For centuries, the tribalization of the local region has determined the odds of success and failure in the enactment of new political orders and later even the modern attempts at state building.

It was with the eclipse of Qadhafi's rule, however, that this "tribalization" of Libyan politics raised the profile of Libyan tribal dynamics to a degree largely unprecedented in Libya's modern history, with significant consequences for the parameters of Libyan statehood.
