The Frightful Faith in God and Scandinavian literature

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2021

Abstract

The article deals with the Czech stereotype that Scandinavian literature is dark, gloomy and depressing. The author of the article connects this view to two phenomena: the frightful faith in God within the Pietistic line in Scandinavian religious life and the fact that Czechia is one of the least religious countries in the world.

Most of the examples come from the works of Henrik Ibsen.
