Annual Meeting of the Gypsy Lore Society and 2021 GLS Conference on Romani Studies

Abstract

Gypsy Lore Society conferences are among the most significant annual scholarly events devoted to Romani Studies worldwide. The 2021 GLS Conference on Romani Studies was organized in Prague by the Romani Studies Seminar at the Department of Central European Studies, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in cooperation with Institute of Sociological Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University.

Due to the pandemic crisis, the conference was organized as a hybrid event. The conference attracted 140 contributions from scholars working in the field of Romani studies from Europe, both Americas and Asia and received the interest of 176 participants.

Organized as a multidisciplinary event, the conference contributions covered different aspects of the life, culture, history as well as the current situation of the Roma, including latest developments and effects of the covid-19 pandemic in different Romani communities and Roma-related fields worldwide. The conference also covered topics related to the reflection of the position of researchers, power hierarchies and imbalancies in the production of the knowledge, the historical absence of the Romani voice in knowledge production.

Peer-reviewed volume containing 3 articles and the abstracts of all conference contributions and panels was produced as e-publication.
