Presentation of Particles in Teaching Czech to Foreigners

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2021

Abstract

Frequency analysis of parts of speech in the first spoken corpus of Czech - Prague Spoken Corpus (PSC) revealed that every seventh word in commonly spoken speech is a particle. Such a high frequency obliges linguists to describe and define their function and use more accurately, as well as teachers of Czech as a foreign language to reflect on the possibilities and suitability of their presentation in teaching Czech to foreigners.

After a brief presentation of the main results achieved in the study of particles occurring in PSC, they will be subjected to an analysis of the textbook of the Basic Czech series in terms of the representation and use of particles in textbook texts. Particles are an integral part of commonly spoken speech, and their adequate use, among other things, makes it sound authentic and natural, and a foreign language speaker achieves this gradually.

We will further focus on the possibility of presenting particles in Czech courses for foreigners and on the types of appropriate exercises that help foreign language speakers to master them.
