Abstract

The contrastive analysis of two modern Czech versions of Keatsʼs "The Eve of St Agnes" shows differences in the translatorsʼ refashioning of the Spenserian stanza, with consequences for the overall euphony and rhythm in each case, as well as individual preferences in the treatment of Keatsʼs rich imagery and different levels of deliberate archaizing in lexical choices and syntax, especially in direct speeches.
