Abstract
In the sports environment, the name of Jiří Stanislav Guth-Jarkovsky is associated with his long-term membership in the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Thanks to his personal friedship with the founder of modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, Jiří Guth has been a member of the IOC since its inception in 1984.
His education was primarily a teacher, graduating from the Faculty of Philosophy at Charles-Ferdinand University. He is famous for his writings, which focus on social etiquette in all areas of life.
He was a member of Sokol. He was at the birth of the Czech Amateur Athletic Union, the Czech (later Czechoslovak) Tourist Club and the Czech (later Czechoslovak) Olympic Committee.
He was recognized translator and bibliophile. After the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia, he became a ceremonial officer of the Office of the President of the Republic.
In this position, he was even the creator of the highest Czechoslovak state Order of the White Lion. We coimmemorate the 160th anniversary of the birth of this important personality of our sport.
