Abstract
The paper introduces role and potential of learning and education for adult people and it lists their positive effect at the individual and social levels. It also introduces the widely used and influential approaches used in conceptualisation and in research of adult learning and education - theory of social learning, theory of transformative learning, critical approaches oriented towards the problem of social justice and biographical approaches.
