Poetic aspects of Slovak-Hungarian literary translation through the example of a postmodern free verse by Mila Haugová

Abstract

The National Library of Foreign Languages in Budapest has launched a translation competition for aspiring translators in 2019. The task was to translate into Hungarian a poem by Slovak poet Mila Haugová Magenta published in September 2012.

The comparison of translation experiments allows for the presentation of well-defined partial translation problems that reflect both the inner subtleties of the poem and the translator's own interpretive view of the poem. The conference paper focuses on specific examples of unusual expressions and unexpected conjunctions that deserve special attention and that have proven to be a significant translation challenge in almost all versions.
