Plate drift, tectonics, with Cadomian, Caledonian, Variscan, and Alpine orogeny in the upper part of the lithosphere crust and the uppermost mantle, together with erosion caused by the processes in hydrosphere and atmosphere belong to the most significant aspects of the Earth's planetary geomorphology. Among the best studied geological structures are the regions related to Variscan orogeny, which also contain Variscan-turned older inclusions.

This is valid especially for the isotopic studies. For example the ratio of the 87Sr/86Sr isotopes from the fossil sea water sediments, predominantly formed by calcium carbonates (i.e. limestone) ranges 0.708-0.709; whereas within the territories formed by the Variscan orogeny, the ratio of isotopes bound to granite and other igneous rocks ranges 0.710-0.713.

These differences have implications for current research in paleontology, archaeology and other fields.
